Question
I have a 1991, 140 hp Evinrude. I've lost water pressure in my p-hole. I'm having water leaks through the joint grooves on the lower unit.  Would you have any idea of what I need to do.

Thank you in advance.

Answer
Hi Joel...Thank you for selecting the undersigned to respond to your question. By the way, I'm not a mechanic.

First of all, if a stream of water is not flowing strongly downward from the underside of the powerhead, in all likelihood, the impeller or water pump in the lower unit requires replacement, or the fresh water intake is restricted by foreign material.

Secondly, if you're experiencing milky oil in the lower unit, and you believe it is caused by water getting inside via the upper/lower unit joint, then it's possible the bolts are loose, and/or the gasket is broken. Also, check the bullet designed cone at the bottom of the lower unit for a crack. This could have resulted from an impact with solid submerged object.

What you need to do is take the outboard engine to a qualified and reliable marine mechanic to trouble-shoot and resolve the symptoms.
