Yamaha 150

Question
Hey Ron, I have a 1987 yamaha 150 and on the way home from fishing the other day we were cruising down the river and all of a sudden the motor revved way up and we slowed way down. It felt like we snagged a crab trap or something but there was nothing there. And now it will only move at an idle speed, anything more than that it will just rev and not go anywhere. Any ideas??                                                    Thanks -Corey

Answer
Hi Corey...Thank you for selecting the undersigned to respond to your question. I presume all prop blades are in tact and undamaged.

Did you check and ensure the prop nut is secure?

Did you check and confirm the centre hub of the prop hasn't broken or spun loose?

When you start the engine, have you tried holding the prop shaft to see if there's any slippage. If affirmative, there's internal damage that should be rectified by a qualified and reliable marine mechanic.

Safe Boating
Ron
