Winterizing my boat

Ron,
My boat is stored out of water on a rack. I am scheduled for winterizing next week. We just had a storm come through and the temp dropped to 27 degrees. Can my engine hold on for a day or so at these temps? I have a Volvo 5.7 Inboard motor on a Cobalt Boat. DO I need to go cover the engine with a blanket? and would that help? At what temp do I really have to worry?

We all know water freezes at 32F or 0C, and that it expands. Its the expanding process that causes engine blocks and exhaust manifolds to crack. Internally, water journals can fracture, eventually resulting in contamination of crankcase oil, which in turn can damage the crankshaft, pistons, and bearings. The longer the temperature remains at or below freezing the greater the probability of serious engine damage.

Temporarily, I recommend putting a thermostatically controlled heater in the engine compartment to prevent water from freezing. Sometimes, a 100W light bulb can suffice, when placed beneath the engine.
