I wanted to find out if you can use non mercruiser parts on the engine, such as cap, points, condenser from a automotive store or do you need mercruiser parts.

Always use MerCruiser parts, particularly when it involves the ignition system. For example, a non-marine starter or alternator can emit sparks, which could ignite fuel fumes within the bilge. Should there be any warranty remaining on the engine, its wise to maintain the engine with MerCruiser parts.
