Triple Crown/Breeders Cup

2016/7/15 11:26:22

Question
Hi. I was just confused on something. I know about the Triple Crown, and I thought that was the biggest event in racing, but I just learned how prestigious the Breeder's Cup is. Is the Breeder's Cup seen as more important/bigger than the Triple Crown races? Thanks!

Answer
Danielle,

That is a hard question to answer, because it is a matter of individual preference, but in general, I would say that the Triple Crown is the more prestigious  thing to win, because it isn't just one race, but a series of three (the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stake), all in a short period of time, and all at different distances.  The difficulty in winning the Triple Crown itself is reflected by how few times it has been actually been accomplished.  There have only been 12 Triple Crown winners in history, and the last one was in 1978.

The Breeder's Cup is considered a huge event because it involves the best horses from every corner of the world, and horses of all ages, not just three year olds.  That said, it is only one race, and somebody wins it every year.
