odd scars on adopted race horse

Question
I recently adopted a retired standardbred trotter. On his hind hocks he has, on the inside of each leg, four perfect small circle scars. I would say each is the size of an eraser. They are in the formation of a square with a circle being on each corner of the imagined square. What kind of procedure would create this type of scar? Thank you in advance.

Answer
Hi Susan,
Sounds interesting. I'm not sure what they are but because they are so even it sounds like its been a planned procedure rather than an accident.
He may have pins strengthening weak hocks or he may have had some sort of correctional surgery to correct his gait.
I'd ask the previous owner or a vet.
Hope this helps,
Regards,
Don Boddie

Hi Susan,
Have you had any luck working out what those scars were? I have asked around various contacts at race meetings and no one knows. This is a mystery I would like to get an answer to.
Thanks,
Don Boddie
