Question
I picked up an old race horse from my neighbor 24years old but in excellent shape, she had 12 colts she has not been ridden for 14years,very gentle,my question is can i train this horse to be  a trail horse for my daughter so we can go on rides with my other horeses or is it too dangerous, the last time she raced she was 7years old do you think she still remember?
Thank you
Emil

Answer
Emil,

I've known several retired racehorses that made excellent trail horses.  If the mare in question is as gentle as you say, I would see no problem in retraining her to be your daughter's mount.  Just remember that at her age, she will probably tire easily, so don't over stress her.  24 is fairly old for a horse, especially one who raced until age 7, and then produced 12 foals.
