bulging ankles

Question
HI, WE ARE LOOKING TO BUY A 2 YR OLD MALE AS A RACE HORSE.  HE HAS LARGE BUMPS ON HIS ANKLES.  THE OWNER SAYS THAT THEY ARE SOME FORM OF EXTRA CALCIFICATION ON THE BONES AND WILL HAVE NO IMPACT ON HIS PERFORMANCE. DO YOU HAVE ANY KNOWLEDGE OR ADVISE ON THIS MATTER?  THANK YOU!

Answer
Katy,

Bulging ankles could be caused by a variety of different things.  Some don't affect performance in the least, and some can affect it in a big way.
Your best bet is to have a good racing vet x-ray the ankles and give you his determination of the underlying cause, and whether or not he thinks that it will affect the horse's racing career.
Good Luck!
