trainer schools

Question
hello sir, are there any horse racing schools so that i can learn all about training a thoroughbred racehorse?

Answer
Hi Rohit:

Thanks for your question.  This is a question that I answered a few years ago for a young man that eventually became a trainer by going to work for the late Bob Holthus.

There are a few classes available that would show parts of how to be a trainer, but nothing compares to the plan that most successful trainers embark on when they decide that is what they want to do.  The most successful trainers have never had any kind of formal training (classroom), and the few that I have talked with all tell me that you can't learn in a classroom what you will need to learn to do the job.

In the racing industry in the United States, you must pass a few tests at the race track to become a licensed assistant trainer. I would get with a stable as a groom or hot walker and work your way up to barn foreman. After a few years, then maybe take a shot at getting an assistant trainer's license. It pays ok, but you basically do all the work that the trainer usually does. You may as well get your trainer's license at this point- the tests are basically the same for assistant trainer and trainer in most states.  I don't have any idea what the procedure would be in another country, but I'll bet it's not that different.

Again, there are classes out there, but I would just find a trainer who is willing to teach someone new. It pays very little at first, but it's worth the experience and that is what it takes to succeed in the horse racing industry.

If you feel I have assisted you with your question, please leave me a favorable rating.
