When to X-Ray Thoroughbred Colt Knees: Timing and Considerations

Question
I HAVE A THOROUGHBRED COLT FOALED 5/15/06. HE HAS BEEN BROKEN LIGHTLY IN DECEMBER AND TURNED OUT. WHEN SHOULD WE X-RAY HIS KNEES TO SEE IF THEY ARE CLOSED?  IS 22+ MONTHS TOO EARLY?
WE WILL GIVE HIM A BRIEF REFRESHER BEFORE SENDING HIM TO THE
TRACK FOR FULL STRENGTH TRAINING.
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP

Answer
Kurt,

Different horses mature at different rates.  Definately x-ray the knees to ensure that they are closed before going on with him.  If they aren't closed now, wait some time and x-ray again.  Your vet will be able to give you some idea from the first set of X-rays how long to wait before taking the second set.
