Is my horse ready for a 6 furlong race.

Question
I have a two year old in training .  He has 125 days of galloping 1.5 and 2 miles a day over the last 6 months.  He has had three  3/8 works and two 1/2 works.  The best 3/8 was from the gates at 36.2 and his latest work at 1/2 was 49.2 both at the fairgrounds. I have been breezing him every 7 days for 5 weeks.  I have 9 days before the only race wrote for him for a while and its 6 furlongs.  Should I work him five furlogs before the race and do you think he has the condition for a 6 furlong race.  The jock said he handeled the 1/2 ok. There are no 5 furlong races.

Answer
hi-- well, i had a big 2 yr old  who was a very lazy colt and he needed a 3/4 mile work before he ran the 6 fur race AND FINISHED 2ND , BUT GOT HIT IN HIS EYE IN THE RACE.  it all depends on the horse it's self. some horses need more work then others.since it is his first race he might need  this one as he will be racing for the first time. i would work him 3/4 quarters from the gate to sharpen him up. i believe in working a horse  the distance he is going to run ,especially if it is the first race.  hope this helps you  thanks ED HESS
