knee/leg injurie

Question
Ok, the outdoor track season has began and my coach wanted me to start doing hurdles again since i did them the two seasons previous.

The first couple of days i had no problems with the exception of some awkward landings and such (getting back into the groove and such).  as the second week of practice came around i was experiencing some knee pain when i land on my left leg but would continue to keep going since practice was maybe about half way through.

now i can jog like at a cross country pace and such but when i went to a hurdle i landed on my left leg and had to hop to get off my leg because of the pain that it caused.

Answer
I hope we can fix this relatively quick Tyler.  I do have a few suggestions.  Depending on what it is will determine how easy it is to fix.

First, Ice after practice and in the morning.

I hope your pain is anterior knee pain because that can be fixed very quickly. If it's anterior knee pain then you need to perform the two exercises in these videos.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rf-AKupMPNk and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEtrqCu8Ne8

Perform the above exercises and see if your pain improves. If it's anterior knee pain it very likely will improve quickly.  If it's not, you need to make sure that you land correctly.  Pay attention to the difference between the way you land on your right foot and the way you land on your left foot. If you do not alternate legs then practice leading with your right leg.  This isn't necessary for competition, but it will help you improve your land on your left foot.

If neither of these easy fixes improves your pain within a week then you need to see a physical therapy doctor for further evaluation.  Please let me know if you have any more questions or have more information that will help me give better suggestions.  Good luck Tyler!
