Knee Hurts

2016/7/22 10:05:50

Question
Hi

i have pain in my knees when i am trying to squat. So when i bend myself in half sitting position i sense pain in the front and outside of my knee and as i lower myself down, the pain becomes unbearable. At that time, the whole knee hurts. the pain in my right knee is several several degrees more than in my left knee.

to give a background of myself, I am 32 years, woman who has just started running (2 months). I have run 10k twice. My running path has uphills and downhills, not steep but for quite a bit of stretch.

I had expereinced this pain but not to this degree 5 months ago when i used to learn tennis. however, the pain ws not unbearable and it has been always there since then. But the intensity is many many times more. it now makes me scream.

After my last 10k which was last fri, my right knee really hurt while walking, climbing down stairs. i have taken complete rest this week. Pain is not there when walking. right knee still hurts a lot and slight pain in left knee while squatting. Have been using ice and some balms. I have been going for some walks with no discomfort. During the last week, knee also used to click, grind, like clicking of knuckles. now its minimal. i have no problem in bending my knees, stretching my legs, no pain at all.

My height is 165 cms and my weight is 63 kgs.

Can i resume running?
What exactly is the problem?
Should i see a doc at this stage?
Should i change my shoes?

I have really begun to enjoy running. It gives me a great feeling and i dont want to give it up. Pls suggest what should i do to overcome this pain. Thanks...

Answer
Hi Brinda
You have all the symptoms of alignment and tracking issues along with possible chondromalacia which is not a serious problem that can't be corrected with patience and working with the necessary workouts consistently. To answer your direct questions 1 2 3 4.

1..No
2..It is what i explained up above Alignment and tracking and possible chondromalacia
3..At no cost should you see a Doctor since they have no training in exercise science or nutrition knowledge and the only thing you will receive is a generic way of practicing defensive medicine so they don't get sued with all kinds of tests which is totally unnecessary.
4..Shoes have nothing to do with your situation

Brinda...Let me know how you want to proceed or if you want to take another direction. If you want to discus this over the phone to get more clarity you can call me here in Albuquerque New Mexico any time.Just let me know when is a good time for you.I'm available from 6am MT to 11am MT monday thru fri..Just let me know.I have some good friends in India.

Thanks so much for you questions
and your confidence in a quality response
