Knee problems after running

2016/7/22 10:06:17

Question
Hi, may I thank you in advance for your time taken to read and respond.
I am 23 years old and around 4 months ago I embarked on a fitness regime which includes regular gym visits (3/4 times per week) and 3/4 runs per week, usually on alternate days. I started the running by going out for 10 minutes or so for the first few times and increased gradually until after a month or so I was running on average between 6km - 8km, sometimes up to 12km. Since teenage years my right knee has occasionally caused me pain when exerted however I felt it strengthen gradually with each run. A month ago I had a break from running for a week or two, then on my first run out I stupidly ran 10km as I have done so many times before. For the next week I was in quite a lot of pain, though not unbearable, and had some bruising and swelling on my right foot and across both legs and knee's. I rested for a further two weeks but am now experiencing pain in my left knee and left hip joint every time I run. I am now ensuring I spend 10-15 minutes stretching pre and post run, as well as wearing a support bandage on the left knee (I wear relevant running trainers). I am jogging at a much slower pace but I feel the pain in my knee after just 2-3 minutes of light jogging.
I am unsure how to go forward - I have a 10km charity run in May, and want to be as ready for this as possible. When I very first started running, towards the end of run I would feel my right knee start to hurt but this would cause me no pain afterwards. As I said the strength improved to the point where it rarely bothers me, and I was hoping by gradually getting back out on the track this would happen with my left knee (and hip) too.
Do you think I need to completely rest for a while? Or continue to do small runs to try to strengthen it?
Also, on a gym session I usually start off by doing 5 minutes on the treadmill, but am experiencing the pain after 2-3 minutes as well. The pain isn't unbearable, and I am able to carry on lightly, however it does feel uncomfortable and I have a gut feeling I may be adding to the damage.
Your expertise would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks, Jay
