foot pain on inner side of foot

2016/7/22 10:07:04

Question
HI.  I have been scouring the net to find my problem but have not seen any thing for Inner side foot pain.  I have been training for a for a half marathon.  I did a 15k 2 weeks ago and did well.  Just a little knee pain but nothing unusual.  I got a new pair of running shoes and wore them 2 days to break them in.  I went for an easy pace 7 mile run with very little hills.  I thought I just tied the shoes too tight as I had a red mark across the top of my foot and it hurt a little.  I rested  a day and did a 7.7 run but wore my old shoes.  Then the pain got really bad.  I woke up at 2am with a throbbing foot and could find little relief.  Long story short--I have not run for a week and the pain is a little better but it seems to have "moved".  At first it was across the top of my foot but now it is on the left foot --if you go straight down from the medial side of the ankle bone and then towards the toes it hurts right after the little bone on the way to the toes  kind of in the middle of the arch if you went straight down from there, but the arch doesn't hurt.  The really weird thing is that I can be up and about all day and the pain is pretty nonexistent but when i wake up and it will wake me up in the middle of the night--my foot really hurts--there is no swelling or bruising but after sleeping it hurts more and during the day gets better.  I can wear loafers but when i try to put any shoe on that has an upper portion that hurts more but them subsides.   Any ideas?  Thanks!!

Answer
Hi Kim
Since the discomfort has moved around it seems to me it is very likely tendonitis.I do not think it is a stress fracture.I would recommend a lot of icing and using a stationary bike to maintain your fitness. You can trace back in your training and racing to find when it started with 98% accuracy to help you get more insight.Do not use any meds they will just mask the situation and give you a false sense of recovery.Very likely started during 1/2 marathon build up and the stress of race on tendons  and ligaments. You probably needed more recovery from the 1/2.

All the best

John
