Long distance nutrition

Question
My dtr is an 8th grader, just started running long distance. She has track meets after school around 4:00. What would be good to eat for breakfast on the day of a meet?

Answer
For breakfast, it depends on the distance. If it is 3 miles or under, I would reccomend eating very low calorie, maybe a bananna, apple, some veggies. For the day, really, she shouldn't eat much. If she does this, make sure just a few hours before the meet she has another bananna.
What is ideal for 3 miles or under, is to have pasta the night before. She isn't going to do herself much good eating carbs 12 hours or under before her meet. And carbs too soon means a crappy race. In the morning and thruought the day to eat as little as possible, just as long as she doesn't go to the meet with a growly stomach.  But if you don't want to be super picky, just tell her to eat fruits and a little bit of wheat based cereal. Eating light thru the day is key.
