shin splints and running

2016/7/22 10:09:19

Question
I am trying to start running again and get back in shape. I put on about 25 pounds and now when I am running I get terrible pain in my shins. sometimes to the point that it hurts to even walk. If I squat down too long it triggers pain also. Is there anything I can do to help ease the pain, or do I have to just run through it. I have to take 4-6 ibuprophen an hour or so before running now just to make it through a mile run. I want to get away from having to do that since it can damage the liver, or so I've been told. Is there anything else to help?

Answer
Hello, the combination of extra weight and a new running regimen is a recipe for tibial stress syndrome.  I'm not sure how far you are running at a time, but I would use a run/walk regimen....maybe 2 minutes running, then 2 minutes walking, etc.  I'm willing to bet that you'll be able to go further with this method than by running only.  I would also back off on how often you run and try some cycling, swimming, elliptical, to take some stress off of your shins while still getting a good workout in.  Continuing to run through this, esp. by masking the pain w/ ibuprofen could result in a tibial stress fracture....a guaranteed 6 weeks of absolutely no running.  Be conservative here and let yourself heal.

I would also...after runs...lay a bag of frozen veggies on my shin to reduce inflammation.  Finally, consider running on trails instead of road or sidewalk to minimize "slapping" of your foot and make sure that your shoes are not old and are appropriate for your foot type.

Luckily, this injury usually responds quickly to these treatments.  Hopefully, you're good as new in 2 weeks.
