Unusual lumps above outer ankles

Question
I have these strange lumps on both of my lower legs. They are located roughly 3 inches above my ankles on the outsides of my legs nearly directly above the ankles. I would describe their shape as a peanut; a small lump and a larger one oriented vertically roughly the size of a small peanut (one peanut per leg). It is difficult to feel the muscle they are on or near. If I had to guess I would say it is the muscle that pulls the foot up, based purely on the location of the lumps. If I push into the lumps I can feel depressions in what I think is muscle. Perhaps some sort of fluid build up?

I am 23 years old. I used to run a lot as a child but into my late teenage years I went thru a hiatus of sorts; A very long period of no activity in the lower legs. About 3 years ago I attempted to re-introduce myself to running but encountered serious shin splint pain and eventually stopped running all together. I began weight training my lower legs due to the inability to run. I assumed my legs were just weak and needed to be strengthened. 3 years later - still haven't attempted a run but still weight training legs. Not sure if any of this is relevant.

The lumps become more prominent after a work out. I do not experience any high amount of pain while using legs, none that I can discern from the burning sensation of heavy lifting anyway.

Answer
Mitch, you need to see a Medical Doctor.  That is not a normal reaction to running or lifting.  It is a possible sign of poor fluid flow of lymph or blood.  Both of these could be serious.  I hope not, but you should definitely get it checked out.  Once you have this problem figured out try different running forms.  You should be able to get back to running if this is your desire.  Follow-up with more questions on this once you've been checked by a Medical Doctor.
