Chicago Marathon with bursitis and piriformis syndrome

Question
Hello,
I am an experienced marathon runner, on my way to Chicago in a couple of days in hopes of breaking the 3:00:00 barrier. I have run Boston 4 times, and always with some sort of injury by race day. I have toughed it out through some major obstacles, and Chicago is joining that club. I have been working so hard on re-hab for my patellar tendonitis from last year, that my piriformis syndrome crept back up on that side, and I now have bursitis in my hip from overuse. Piriformis was always a "pain in the butt", but this summer it has taken over my glute, hamstring, and down my calf on long runs. I have sought sports massage, tons of ice, rounds of rest or biking (to the point where I almost feel out of shape) and ultra-sound. Can I muster through the pain this Sunday? or am I kidding myself? I have worked all summer and I am starting physical therapy next week, but I just want to compete on race day.
Thanks for your advice.

Answer
Hi Lindsay
I definitely would not place your feet on that starting line. You have just to many things going on and will only get worst and who only knows what else will be added to your list of injuries if you try to wing it.Based on your pass you seem to have a problem backing off in your preparations leading up to the marathon. You should never get to this point. If you would like to discuss this by phone to get some more clarity and info you can call me here in albuquerque NM any time from... 6a on..Just go to my site for contact page Lindsay.

All the best

John
