Sitting

Question
I have recently noticed some changes in my health and would like your opinion.
I am overweight, with a very pronounced abdomen. I have tried diligently to lose weight and shape up, and have managed to do so to some extant, but my belly still sticks out pulling my lower back in.I honestly think its genetic as my Dad and his brothers also looked like this. I dont know what to do about the slow metabiolism, I just dont eat much and eat healthy.
I am in my fifties and am a long haul trucker. I want to avoid the back problems that many of my colleagues get, many younger than me.
I recently started walking up to an hour a day or more when I get the time, and when I find a clean spot I do sit ups. I have been doing this for a couple weeks now.
I used to jog but got sore knees and feet, even wearing good shoes.I dont want to set myself up for more injuries or arthritis so went to walking-as a kid and young (poor) man I walked a lot and was fairly slim
I have noticed a big change- when I am at home or in a hotel I no longer feel the need to lay down-I am able to sit in an easy chair and get the same amount of comfort. I havent been able to do this for years. Is this an indication that my back is improving thanks to my exercise, and if so what else can I do to keep improving it?

This Chicago, South Loop & Elmhurst Podiatric Sports Medicine Doc of AnklenfootCenters.com says.......

Dear Gord,

The walking will definitely help! You are one smart guy in wanting to do something for yourself that is good!
Continue your walking and continue to slowly your mileage and speed. Make sure you wear good supportive gym shoes for your feet & knees. Try some situps and pushups-Those will help with yous back.
Always start and finish your exercises with stretches(10 minutes) and do stretches daily(5 minutes).
Google for additional back exercises and keep it simple and be patient.
Look into a diet you can do-That will help with everything.
Seattle Sutton is pretty good for half a week, since you are going to need additional calories for your job.Eat about one and a half of their portions after you lose some weight.
Keep up the good work!!!!!
