post running coldness

Question
I'm 63, male, and have been an avid runner for over 14 years....15 marathons and run about 40 miles a week. Health supposedly excellent - very low cholesteral, resting heart rate of 44bpm and have had every heart test known...my cardiologist says i'm probably his healthiest patient....I often notice that after a run I tend to get cold and stay cold for a good while.  I sweat a lot during my runs and replenish with water and gatorade, i think often enough. I know after marathons we are wrapped to keep warm but i'm also getting cold following some runs of 5 or so miles.....of course, where i live the weather has gotten cooler so maybe that's part of it....i feel fine otherwise....just wondering what you think....thanks

Answer
Hi Don
First congratulation on your fitness level.Keep up the great work and keep training properly for the next marathon.Sweating a lot during any run of any distance is a world class sign of fabulous conditioning. It is the bodies natural way of cooling it self. The demographics other than which is normal is you should feel a little colder. The other factor is with some one with your kind of shape and conditioning and fitness level is your body fat.It could be a little to low,but only getting tested with a reliable source such as getting dunked in a water tank(gold standard) or if possible finding someone who gives gold standard calipers testing, but is hard to find.My feeling is your perfectly fine and maybe adding a little more good fats to your diet like olive oil, walnuts would help. The key to training diet and optimal performance is to test test test and evaluate the results and adjust accordingly.I used to live in maine on bailey island 45 minutes north of portland and good friends of joan benoint samuelson 1984 Olympic gold medal marathon and coached her husband,so i know what a cold run on the coast is all about. If you have any other questions just shout or call anytime from 6am on here in albuquerque.

All the very best to Ya

John
