sore calf muscles

Question
I have been running on a treadmill for about 12 weeks with no problems. This week I went for a 4 mile run outside which is less than I jog on my treadmill. My calf muscles were very sore the next day. I really notice the pain when I first start jogging and when I'm done.  Can you tell me what is happening? I have took two days off, and I really want to back to running or my hill training regiment without so much pain. Was it the asphalt or just over work as I suspect?

Answer
Hi Justin
Very simple Justin....After running on the treadmill your muscles and connective tissue has reach a range of motion in direct preportion to your stride length on the treadmill and when you go outside your stride length is going to increase which is going to put a added stress on the those tissues.A normal process in the progressive up tic in the training overload.Let me give you a program that i use for all my athletes whether they are world class or just recreational that they have to perfect and refine to eliminate any down time such as yours.Justin if you follow this and put it into practice and follow it you will never have an injury that will last as long as you address it right away.It is very simple Justin. The program is called OFR......Overload the Musculosketal system....Feed it with high tech nutrition and then High Quality rest. The REST is the most important after you have performed the    the earlier stages. If you have any other questions just ring me up Justin.

All the very best to ya

John
