running to get in shape


Question
I am an ex-runner and feel that I could get back into the groove rather easily.  I have recently gained about 10 pounds, mostly in the middle section (waist, hips, thighs)  I do want to loose weight but don't want to get super skinny legs.  I have the typical egg shape for the most part.  Running did the trick for me last time but it did seem that my legs got smaller.  Any tips on running to get in shape without loosing too much in the legs?

Not sure what to say about the 'skinny legs' part.  My suggestion is to worry about strength & keeping muscle tone.  Doing a 2-3x/week strength training program for the total body can help with the fat loss goals, in conjunction with the running.  Many times when people try to lose weight due to just cardiovascular activity only (such as walking, running, cycling...), they will lose weight, but about 1/2 of that could be losses in muscle mass, which is the stuff that helps keep up your metabolism to burn more calories at rest.  Strength training & running is a great 1-2 combo in battling fat loss.  I would attempt to do at least a 2x/week program, as this has done sufficiently for my clients who are really busy, and have time for 2-3 workouts a week with me.  It's enough to make a difference in building & preserving lean body mass, without having to worry about 'bulking up' as many ladies do when it comes to 'lifting weights' for strength training.
