new runner with several pains

Question
Hi, I am relatively a new runner.  I have worked out for
the last year 4 days a week but for my cardio I always use
to do 30 min on the elliptical.  I recently starting
running on the treadmill instead and have been doing it
for about a month, 4 days a week for 30 min.  First I
noticed a real tightness in my calves, and now my ankles
are very sore.  It is the inside of both of my ankles and
it is very tender to the touch and sore even when I am not
running.  So I bought new running sneakers and the last
time I ran my shins hurt very bad I had to stop.  I really
enjoy running but am not sure why I am feeling all the
discomfort.  I did jump right into running doing it 4 days
a week for 30 min, so I am not sure if that is the cause.
Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you!!

Answer
Hi Jennifer
You are going to experience some situations while your body adapts to a new level of stress on the musculature, and you just have keep making adjustments along the way such as duration, number of days, intensity, etc, etc. The area on your ankles seems to be a slight case of shin splints.Start applying ice frequently  to reduce inflamation.Everybody's body is different and it's ability to handle a given workload based on there past athletic history. You just have to work with what you have and move gradually with a lot of patience and consistent workouts. If your doing the treadmill don't use the incline. You just have to take your time Jennifer and in time your body will accept the increase level and you will do fine.If you have any other questions jus get in touch.

All the best

John
