Hey there,
I JUST quit smoking, and I'd like to start jogging. I was really lazy, and I'm kinda outta shape. Do you have any tips for me? What kind of shoes should I buy? Any advice you have would be great.
Thanks!

Good for you.You came to the right place.I quit 27 years ago myself and have never looked back.24 marathons latter.
I am going to ask you to give me more history on yourself like height weight age past athletic history how long you were smoking health history ETC. ETC.This is serious business and shouldn't be taken lightly.Get back to me with your coments and we will pick it up from there

Hi John,
Thanks for your response so quickly. Here's the details on me...
I'm 22, and I smoked for 8 years steady, about a pack a day, give or take, probably a little less. Im about 5'8", and 150lbs approx.
I'm not TOTALLY out of shape, I worked in a csino, hauling 25lb bags of coin all day, and when I was younger I was in a lot of sports, volleyball, basketball, fastball, and I skiied for about 13 years. Im strong, but anything to do with cardio kills me. I tried aerobics once, but Im too unco-ordinated. My only problem is my knees. I had to quit ball, because I was catcher, and my doctor said it was too hard on my knees. Housemaids knees, is what he told me...so, that's me, in a nutshell.
Thanks so much!

Answer
Hi jes
Your starting off point isn't to bad and you caught the smoking habit just in time.Don't ever ever go back because it will kill you or produce many health related problems. That i know for sure.....You want to start easy and do not rush it.Use time not mile's.to gauge your progress and you should be confortable when your running and not in pain. You should begin with the end in mind and for you that is about sixty to seventy years from now.You don't have to race or run marathon's to enjoy the many health benifits for years to come. The experts say it takes about a year to rid the body and rebuild internally so just enjoy the process.About running shoes....Go to a good running store or sport shop and select a shoe that just feel's confortable. The brand does not make a difference.
The price will run for a good shoe from 50 to 75 dollars. No need at all to spend over 75.00 for a shoe.
I would use 20 to 30 minutes as the jump off for your program and work up to 45 to 1 hr. in 4 to 6 months.
I would also recomend you schedule a doctor appoinment to get a base line check up.Blood preasure..cholestral..resting heart rate..blood work up.Etc. ETC.This will be envaluble for the road ahead.

I hope this gets you started and on your way jes.Good luck.
Anything else you no where to go

The very best to you
John
