Understanding Climbing Pitches: Length, Rope, and Angle
Question
I understand the pitches of a climb are determined by the length of the climb and the length of the rope. example one mile climb with 160 ft. rope is about 33 pitches in that climb. How does the angle of accent affect this for example if my angle is 34 degrees.
Answer
Craig,
The angle is insignificant. The length of a pitch is not determined by the length of the rope or angle of the terrain, rather, the pitch might be determined by the best place to belay. Moreover, pitches may be relatively short to provide a comfortable and safe place to belay the second, for example, one pitch might be 150 feet and the next pitch is merely 50 feet.
There are many variables to your question, however, the angle of the terrain typically not one of them.
Hope this helped,
Jeff
