Plastic vs. Leather Mountaineering Boots: Which is Better?
Question
Why does most mountaineering guides require you to have plastic boots instead of leather? Because I just bought a $400 pair of scarpa's& thtey'er leather but guides say I should have plastic one's, should I sell them and get the others?
Answer
Simply the warmth. Plastic boots have several layers and are quite a bit warmer. Most guide services do not want to deal with any frostbite problems while guiding.
I would think about keeping your new leather boots, as they will be more comfortable for most outings and long approaches. You could most likely pick up some used plastics fairly cheep.
Good luck,
