First Outdoor Climbing at Toulmne Meadows: Tips & Understanding Unprotected Routes
Question
Hi,
I've been climbing for about a year in rock gyms and this coming weekend for the first time I'll be climbing outside at Toulmne Meadows. In the gym I climb my max is 5.11. I'm aware that there is probably a huge discrepency between climbing in a gym and outside. What would you recommend for a first climb outside (in Toulmne Meadows)? Also, what does it mean when a climbing route has sections that are referred to as 'unprotected'? Thanks in advance for you help/advice!
Best,
Brian
Answer
I honestly don't have any experience there. I would suggest that you buy a guide book. I'm sure there are many, it's a popular place.
In my experience, routes outside are more difficult than those inside because inside you can see the holds and you have to find them outside. Once you know where the holds are, the outside routes become more like those inside.
I don't know about the context in which unprotected was used, but I would assume that there are no bolts in the rock to clip to. Or, there are no bolts and no place to put traditional protection.
Hope that helps some,
Nick
