Sir George Everest and Mount Everest: The Truth About the Surveyor General
Sir George Everest never climbed Mount Everest. In fact, he never even set foot on the mountain. He was the Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843, and during his tenure, he oversaw the Great Trigonometric Survey of India, which was a massive project to map the entire country. As part of this survey, Everest's team measured the heights of many mountains in the Himalayas, including Mount Everest. However, Everest himself never actually climbed any of these mountains.
