Question
Hi, im 16, a sophmore in high school and row for Holy Sprit in Brigantine, New Jersey. i was wondering if my erg split was good for my height and weight. Im 5' 11" and weigh 155 lbs. my erg split for a 2k is 1:53. will this get me a scholorship for college?

Answer
Hi Bethany: Ah, Holy Spirit.  When I rowed at Temple many years ago, many of my teammates went to Spirit.  I didn't know women rowed there.

Your time is outstanding.  For heavyweight women your age, you are in the Top 8%.  In fact, you are only 24 seconds off the world's best time.

While erg scores are improtant for recruitment, they are not the only thing.  Your on-water performance -- especially strong finished in major regattas -- is probably more important than your erg times.  Your academic grades, college boards, and community service hours also play a factor in getting an athletic scholarship.  But with erg times like yours, and rowing for a top High School crew like Holy Spirit, you should get the attention of several college coaches.

Good Luck/AP
