What is a correct erg score

Question
Hi, I am a Male rower at a division II school that has produced many world championship caliber rowers in its past, mostly international. I am American and most of my past foreign teammates told me that my erg scores are good enough to make the United States U-23 National team I'm 6'5" 220lbs. My 2k time is 6:18 as of June 2010. What do you think Is a good enough erg score to make a team such as that?

Answer
Hi Adam: Per the Concept II database, your 2K is in the 88th percentile for heavyweights, ages 19-23.  Quite excellent and perhaps within the standards that the U-23 team is looking for.  I'd suggest you shoot for a goal of 6:15 this winter.  That would put you in the Top-10%.

Of course, there are other factors to consider.  The U.S. team may test candidates with a different erg.  There also may be questions about your on-water and race experience.  But with your size and erg scores, you have the potential of making an impression at Selection Camp.

If I were you, I would send queries to the U.S. team coach for what his expectations are.

Good Luck/AP

P.S. - Did you father row at Temple.  I knew a Fran Berger back then.
