height for female rowers

Question
My 13 year old daughter just started rowing, alongside my 15 year old son.  He is 6'3".   She is 5'4", probably isn't finished growing, but probably WON'T be tall.  She's strong, solid and learning very quickly.  But, if she sticks with it, will her height prevent her from being recruited by colleges?  Do all female rowers (not coxswains) need to be tall to be varsity or considered for national level competitions/teams?   I'm a greenhorn rowing mom and can't seem to discern the answer to this nagging question from stuff I've read.  Many thanks for your time.

Answer
Hi Rose: If she gets to 5'-6", she could feasibly row for 95% of the crews in the college.  Only the most elite crews are going to be very particular about height standards and will want all their women to be at least 6'-0".  So many other factors (conditioning, attitude, technique, experience, heart, strength), and not just height determines the success of a rower.

I'd say everything will be fine if your daughter puts in the effort.

Good Luck/AP
