Is my 2k good enough?

Question
QUESTION: Hi, i am just beginning my grade 10 year, and I have a 6:41 2k. Is my time good enough? I am aiming for a 6:15 by grade 12... Would a 6:15 be good enough to get into a school like Harvard or Princeton? I also have a 4.0 gpa.

Thanks in advance.

ANSWER: Hi Martin: It's an excellent time.  Your time puts you in the Top-20% for heavyweights your age.  A 6:15 (for your age) would put you in the Top-10 in the WORLD! Not percent -- Individuals!

Erg times are important, but are not the sole criteria for acceptance into a major rowing program.  Your on-water rowing experience (and success) is probably the biggest factor. For an Ivy League school, you outstanding GPA and your excellent rowing pedigree makes you are highly likely candidate for acceptance.

QUESTION: Well for racing experience, I won the Canadian Nationals in our eight and came second in the double in grade 9. For this year my goal is to get sub 6:30 and win the nationals in a single. I am 6 foot 4 and 185 pounds, would I have a chance at making it into an ivy league if I keep winning races and dropping my erg score to around 6:15?

Answer
Hi Again, Martin: With your grades, erg times, and rowing resume, I'd say you are on track to get accepted to any college rowing program you want.

I'd just recommend you put on about 10-15 pounds of muscle onto your frame through a weight training program and eating the right foods.  That will go a long way in dropping your erg times.
