Removing Mask

2016/7/22 10:36:26

Question
Hello, I start certification classes in February, and I've been reading a lot online about having to remove your mask and put it back on while under the water.  I understand the reasoning behind learning to do this, but I had a question as to what happens if you can't do it.  Keep in mind that I don't know if I can or can't do it yet, I am just curious.  If you practice trying to remove your mask and keep breathing through your mouth, but you just can't close off your nose without pinching it shut, is it acceptable to wear nose plugs under your mask so that when you do remove your mask you don't automatically start trying to breath through your nose?  As I said, I'm just curious.  Thanks.

Answer
There is nothing optional about mask removal and use of a noseplug is not possible (you must be able to have your airway at ambient pressure, a noseplug would prevent this).

On the plus side, I've never had a student that couldn't eventually do this.  You just have to build up to it with the more challenged students.

hope that answers your question.

saludos,
James
