Stevens single shot 410......serial number 674JH

Question
This old shotgun belonged to my Dad when he was a kid.
The serial number seems to be a bit unusual to me so
I am wondering if it may be an early one. My Dad was
shooting it in the 1920's. Also, I was looking for a
computer address for Mr.John Callahan..the Stevens
historian.
Thanks !!

Answer
Hello Wayne.
Your Dad was most likely using this very gun when he shot his first squirrel. Stevens began using a code of letters (A-X, minus O&Q,) to indicate the year of manufacture on their double-barrel shotguns in 1949. Others were not required until the 1960's. I refer you to this interesting article; www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=231485.
As for an e-mail address for Mr. Callahan, I do not know of one. The Thirtieth Edition Blue Book of Gun Values by S.P. Fjestad has Mr. Callahan's address as; 53 Old Quarry Rd. Westfield, MA. 01085. He has a fee to research information related to your firearm.
I hope you can use this information, and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
