Question
Charles,
I recently purchased a savage model 99,in 300sav.It's in very good shape,I have been waiting to purchase one of these for sometime to replace one I swapped away when I was at a less wise time in my life. This is a nice example of a gun I shot the nicest buck in my lifetime with. It's never been drilled for a scope and has a Lyman peep sight. The serial no# is 401892.Can you tell me when this rifle was manufactured, and anything else you might know about it's history.
         Thank You,
         Scott W.

Answer
Hello Scott W.
Yes, Scott, you have a rifle worthy of any collectors vault. As your serial number denotes, it was manufactured in late 1940- early 1941. The .300 Savage cartridge was the father of the 7.62x39 NATO and .308 Winchester cartridge. This is not to say that these cartridges can be fired in the Savage Model 99, nor the .300 Savage fired in the modern rifles chambered in .7.62x39 or .308 Winchester rifles. Your 1940's model was not equipped with a drilled and tapped scope mounting system, since this feature did not appear until the late 1950's. It did come with open sights or a peep sight. The Model 99 has an angle-eject receiver, so it can be scoped. The .300 Savage cartridge is very well suited for large game at long distances, so a scope would be feasible. A word of caution. Only have it mounted by a competent licensed gunsmith.
Please try these web sights, as they will enhance the story of the Savage Model 1899/99 rifle. www.chuckhawks.com/savage_99.htm and www.savage99.com.
I hope this helps answer your questions and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
