38 Special CTG trying to find age of gun

2016/7/22 9:06:56

Question

38 Special CTG
I inherited a 38 Special CTG from my father who recently passed.  I located 2 numbers on the butt of the gun.  The first is 85614 and the second is D661198.  I'm trying to first find out which is the SN and what model it is and how old it is.  Any help is appreciated greatly as I know nothing about guns except this one meant a lot to my daddy...It says it was made in usa and has marcas registradas on it if that helps Thanks~ Kimberly

Answer
Hello Kimberly,

The gun you have was made in 1967 according to the serial number prefix of "D". It is a Smith and Wesson .38 special. They had such a problem with knock offs being made they started putting Marcas Registradas on them which is spanish or latin for "registered trademark". Wish I could help you more, hope this gives you some insight as to what gun you have!
