Question
QUESTION: Jim, I have acquired a BAR Safari in N.O.S. condition that is supposed to be 1967. I am trying to decipher the serial number; 2622m8. Could you tell me the year and how to read the number as far as how many were made that year. Also, a guesstimate of it's value,it's a very pristine gun. Thank you. Dave

ANSWER: David,

Your BAR was made in 1968 as evident by the 8 after the M in the serial number. I would suggest contacting browning.com for the quantity made for that year. Assuming you have a grade I BAR, the value will be about $650, but would look at the blue book of gun values or check the web on various gun sales websites for a cost average. Hope this helps.

QUESTION: Jim Where did you arrive at $650? I checked a few ads and thought it to be worth more like $1400. It is a real Belgium, not Portugal.

Answer
David,

You are correct. I could be wrong at $650. Upon further review of only three websites, $650 might be too high assuming you have a Grade I Belgium Browning BAR 30-06 made in 1968. Here are several listings to consider.  Please keep in mind most of these are GRADE II's which are more expensive than the Grade I's. Most are 98+ to Like New in the Box condition. The 30-06 was probably the most highly produced caliber for the BAR making them common. Just because it says made in Belgium doesn't mean it is high dollar.
