Question
"Hello Sid,I was looking for a value and any History you could give me on my 1953 Remington 30-06,also the unique scope that is on it.I bought this at a auction and it is in really great shape.I had it on the range and did not have to adjust anything. It grouped 4 out of five shots with the second shot drifting off at 2 o'clock(probably me). 127.     Remington mod. 760 ser.# 78275. Standard grade old model slide action .30-06 rifle made in 1953. Detachable magazine. Open sights. Excellent bore and excellent slick action. Clean metal still has 85% factory blue, with wear at the slide action and at the bottom of the receiver. Very good grooved walnut forearm, with finish wear. Very good plain walnut stock with the correct metal butt plate. Includes a leather sling, an extra magazine, and a 4X Bushnell 揝copechief?scope in a Williams side mount. (C&R) Thank you Sid,  Matt"

Answer
Matt,

Please disregard my other reply requesting additional info. What you have provided now will be fine. Thanks for providing same.

The Remington Model 760 was a slide action rifle that was chambered for many various calibers from .222 to .35 Remington. Most had a 22" round blued barrel and were factory original with iron sights. It has a box magazine that is detachable and came with a checkered walnut pistol grip stock.

The model 760 was manufactured between 1952 and 1982. It was produced in the following models: Standard, 760 Carbine, 760D Peerless, 760 Premier, 760F Gold Inlaid, 760 Bicentennial, 760 ADL, and 760 BDL which had basket weave checkering.

It sounds to me like you have either a "Standard" or a "Carbine". If a Standard and in "good" condition (which sounds close to what you have described) it would have an approximate retail value of $200 to $225. If it is a Carbine in "good" condition it would have an approximate retail value of $250 to $275.

The Bushnell "Scopechief" was a very popular 60's/70's (and perhaps a bit beyond) made scope that was "reasonably price" for its time. There have also been newer versions over the years (including recently). I do not have those records in front of me but if I recall....... they sold new in a 4 power most often with a "banner post" or "command post" cross hairs and were approximately a $35.00 scope.

In my opinion the old/er Scope Chief's were of very good quality with decent glass. There was also a Scopechief 2 that was available around the same time. Many of these were made in Japan for Bushnell by Bausch and Lomb. Todays Scopechief sells in the $150 range.

I don't usually see a scope (unless an extremely high end scope) do much for the retail value of a rifle. However since it sounds as though scope is an earlier vintage and in good condition I would personally be willing to affix about a $50 to $70 premium on it. That's just me however and I doubt that most others would care greatly about the scope.

I hope this covers all aspects of your question Matt and thank you for same.
