Question
Hi! I have been shooting for more than 1000rounds, just
want to know when is the time to replace my recoil spring and firing pin of my m1911 commander rock island pistol. Its almost 7mos old. Ive been shooting at the range for more than 100rounds a month. Thanks.

Answer
I would replace only with quality springs from a company like Wolff or ISMI. I'd also use only the factory-rated springs - lighter springs, while they will reduce recoil, will also accelerate wear.

Quality piano wire springs last on average about 2000 rounds, but there is a better way to determine when to change your spring. Always keep a new, unused recoil spring on hand.  When you clean your gun, compare lay the new spring alongside the old one. When the old one has compressed so that it three-coils shorter than the new one, it's time to change.
