Davis-Warner

Question
I have read the post of others on your site regarding the Davis-Warner.  Here is my quandary: over Thanksgiving my uncle gave me a shotgun that was my father's before him. I now have received two that I am having difficulty identifying correctly, this one is stamped Davis Deluxe and the only number I can find anywhere is under the barrel once you break it open (658).

First, I took it to a local antique gun dealer that was not able to tell me much about it other than it was a 12 gauge (although the bore on it is quite large), anyway any idea what the number may mean?

Thank you,

Answer
Hi Buck,

If you have read all my other answers concerning Davis-Warner shotguns, I will not repeat all of that info again in this answer since you no doubt already have it.

As for the number in question, I can only guess that it is some kind of internal production/inventory number used in house by Davis-Warner. I cannot locate any reference material containing this type of number for their shotguns.

Thanks for the question.
