Bore Care

2016/7/22 9:23:28

Question
How often should I use a stainless steel bore brush to my hand gun when  I fired them about 100 rounds a week with lead bullet head. The brand of my bore brush is "kleen Bore". I heard that frequent use of bore brush especially stainless steel can damage the bore of my barrel. Is it ok if I will not use bore brush at all in cleaning my barrel, just bore solvent?

Answer
I always use a brass, bronze, or copper brush.  Using a SS brush works faster, but causes some wear.  If you were to use it a total of about 25 times, you probably couldn't detect wear.  But if you use it often and the number of cleanings gets into the hundreds, you may be able to notice some wear.

So, I would recommend changing to a brass, bronze, or copper brush.  They are softer than the barrel metal and don't cause wear.  If you don't brush, residue will build up in the rifling, and accuracy will suffer.

Hope this helps!

Dave
