reloading 300 win mag and 444 marlin

Question
Hello Rod

This is the first time I'm trying this so bear with me please. I don't know the parameters of how many questions and what type of questions to ask so here goes.
Using reloader 22 powder (that's what I have). What is a good load for 300 winchester magnum if you are loading 110Gr. Speers hollow points? How about the same powder and 220gr. Nosler Partition (got both powder and bullets in a sale)?
Last question. I just boight a lee hand press which works great but every once in a while it caves in a section of the 300 win's shoulder or just down from it. I threw out the ones that pinched the shoulder but loaded the ones with the dent on the side. What causes this and are the slightly deformed cases safe?

Answer
Hi Gerry,

I was not able to develop starting loads using my own software for what you wanted, so did some research and came up with the following:

For your 110gr query; RL-22 From 80.0 grains to 84.0 grains

For your 220gr query; RL-22 From 58.9 grains to 72.5 grains

These figures are based on weight and not bullet design or manufacturer. Given the extremely tight spread on the 110 grain load, you definitely want to start low. This info was gathered from http://www.again.net/~steve/page8a.htm (Steve's Reloading Pages) and while I consider it a good source, I cannot actually recommend those loads. I am providing them as a courtesy to you :)

Finally, caved-in cases are due to either too much case lube or a blocked vent hole in the side of the die. I would have to recommend that you discard any cases that were deformed. These cartridges are much too powerful to take chances with. I hope that helps! -Rod-
