ID of old pistol

Question

My dad traded an old 22 rifle in the 40s for a chromed pistol, 6 shot, that has all the parts stamped with the same number. It has a lanyard ring on the butt. The only ID I find is a set of three symbols in a vertical row on the bullet cylinder. There are two crowns(?)with a large  "U" on the bottom.
I've looked at numerous firearm books and can't find a picture of it or any identifying marks like on this revolver.
If you want, I can send several pictures of the pistol.

Answer
Robert,

I'm really sorry, but there just isn't much to go on.  There are so many pistols produced by so many manufacturers, to try and nail this one down without some sort of branding or manufacturer info is nearly impossible.  I can tell you that the markings on the gun are German proof marks.  Proof houses act as a quality assurance for many firearms manufacturers.  The proof mark of a crown with a "u" underneath is a proof mark used in the city of Suhl and is an indication that the gun was 'inspected'.

A major arms company that was located in Suhl for almost 200 years was J.P. Sauer und Sohn GmbH, producer of hunting rifles, shotguns, and pistols.  If I had to guess, I'd bet that they made your pistol.

Hope this helps a little...

Best regards,

Doug
