Gustloff Werk 22 Rifle

Question
I have one of the Mauser type 22 training rifles that my father brought back from WWII. I would like to restore it. I know that reduces the value of it but its a family heirloom and it will never be sold so it may as well look nice. My problem is the rear sight is missing and I have no idea of what it looked like or how it was fastened to the gun. There are no visible signs of where of how it was attached. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Some of the markings on the gun are: Top: Gustloffwerk Waffenwerk_Suhl
Left Side: Kal 22 Lang Fur Buchsen
Right Side KK Wehrssportgewehl

Answer
Paul,

First, good luck on your project.  You might want to do some reading online or pick up a book on firearm restoration to help you down the correct path...there are some right and wrong things to do when restoring a gun and it is too lengthy a topic to deal with here.

The rear sight on this particular gun was generally mounted forward of the bolt opening.  If you look up forward of the bolt, on top of the barrel above the fore-end grip, you should see where the rear sight would have been mounted.

Most of the Mauser .22 trainers were based on the Mauser Gewehr 98, also called the Mauser Gew 98 design.  If you go to www.gunpartscorp.com and look under 'Mauser' you will see a long list of models.  Find the GEW98 listing and take a look there.  The sight would have consisted numerous parts including a base plate, the sight base and a screw to hold the sight base into the base plate.  The rear sight has a bunch of different parts, but the folks at Numrich Gun Parts should be able to help you with what you need, especially if you need the whole thing.

You also might want to do a little more research into this particular model to see what the originals actually looked like.  There is a lot of information online about the Mauser as it is one of the most widely produced battle rifles in history...

Hope this helps you out a bit...
