info on a particular rifle

My grandfather gave me this rifle when I was a 10 yr old boy. On top of the barrel it says 22-LONG RIFLE  *Crack-Shot*  J.Stevens Arms & Tool Co. Chicopee Falls Mass. USA. It is a rolling-block action single shot. The barrel and fore grip detach from the receiver and stock portion. On the bottom etched into the metal strip behind the trigger guard is D   591. When I used up the ammo he gave me the new ammo was to powerful for the rolling block hammer and breech cover and blew them back open upon firing. It has hung on the wall since then (about 1941). I remember that this rifle was made in the 1890s is this true? Is there anything else you can tell me about it?

Hello Bill. I could set here and repeat the information I found, but I think you can do this one solo. This is the Internet address I found: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STEVENS_ARMS  "Gunsmith Alert" Have a competent licensed gunsmith check your gun, even if you do not intend on shooting it. There are also low velocity .22 rounds called CB or Sub-sonic. These are very safe in most older guns. I hope this answers your questions and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
