J. Stevens & Co, flip down barrel

Question

J. Stevens 3087
This gun was found among Grandfather's belongings after he passed.  No one know how it came into his posession.  It appears to be in good condition.  The barrel is about 3" long with a wooden handle.  Do you know anything about when it would have been manufactured? Can you help me determine its value?
Thank you,
Brent

Answer
Hello Brent. This has been a very difficult firearm to pinpoint. I came up with two candidates. The first is the J.Stevens "Vest Pocket Pistol". The barrel length, however, is only 2 3/4". It is chambered in .22 and .30 calibers. It is the earliest pocket pistol made by J. Stevens & Co. There were only 1,000 manufactured between 1864-1876. The value is placed between $850-$3,300. The other is also with a 2 3/4" barrel. It is called simply the "Pocket Pistol".There were 15,000 made between 1864-1886. The value on this one is $100-$450. Since there is such a huge difference in price, I am going to advise you to contact the top J.Steven's expert. He does charge a fee in the neighborhood of $15.00. Here is his information.

I hope this helps you identify your pistol and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
