Answer
Wayne,

The maker is Deutsche Werke of Erfurt, Germany.  They were a well know maker of the Ortgies pistol, which was a kind of a Browning clone.

This type of rifle is what they used to refer to as a 'garden gun'.  The were pretty popular during the period from 1900 to 1920 for taking care of 'vermin' that got into the garden.  I guess you could say this was a varmint gun for this period.  It was also a popular boy's gun.

The S & J are the logo for Deutsche Werke.  The 'mod 1' is the model number.

Hope this helps you out.

Doug
