History and reconditioning tips

Question
My son inherited a .22 from his grandfather. It has J. Stevens Arms Company, Chicopee Mass.U.S.A *Visible Loading Repeater. PAT. APR. 30-07* on top barrel.  Towards back end of barrel behind sight  22 Short-Long or Long Rifle with a P stamp. It was a gun of my Grandfathers. Just would like to know a little history behind it. Would like some tips on how or if we should have it reconditioned. Would like to hear your thoughts on it.  Thanks

Answer
Hello Amanda. Your rifle is a Stevens Model 70. Manufactured from 1907 to 1934. There was an estimated number of 100,000 Model 70's manufactured in all configurations. The Standard Model 70 was the first pump-action rifle made by Stevens. It consisted of all blue steel except the frame which was case colored. Front sight was a simple bead. Rear sight was an elevator type attached to the barrel with screws. It had a 3/4 length magazine. Some were special ordered with high grade wood and vernier sights. As far as refinishing it, is there a need for this? Has the wood or metal deteriorated to a level of non-use? If not,I would suggest leaving it alone to value it as a collectable. If you are intending to keep it and pass it on to future generations, you might have it professionally cleaned. Do not remove any old finish on it such as bluing or stock finish. But if you want to use it and then pass it along, I would suggest having a qualified gunsmith check it over. If any parts need added or repaired, have it done by him. Then make sure all rust is removed, even if it removes some original finish. The closer you can keep it to original, and still useable, the better. As far as a value, on todays market it can go as far as $600.00. This would be for one in original condition and like new. Most sell for around $300.00. My opinion is, however, if you do sell it, will you still remember it after you have used up the 7 or 8 tank's of fuel? I hope this answers your questions and thank you for asking for me.Charles Gage
