how can i look up the history to my gun that was passed down to me?

Google the model number and make of gun, try different comfinations of make, model and caliber, then you will find some that are for sale and what they are asking for.

You can take to a local gun shop and ask what they will give you for it, it will be low, but they will tell you what the high and low blue book value is for it.
